I have just found that the SPARCOM DRIVE95 that I bought for my HP95LX also
works on the Portfolio. The statement in CONFIG.SYS should read:
DEVICE=DRIVE95.SYS POQET H9600
However, the drive will not format disks with the Portfolio. FORMAT95.EXE hangs
it up, so you must format your disks on another computer.
What is the Drive 95? Is it a floppy drive or a hard drive? How much does it
cost and where did you get it? And does it connect through the
parallel port or the serial port?
The Drive95 is made by Sparcom. It's really made for the HP 95LX, but it can
be hooked up through the serial port and used with other palmtops and PC's. I
have yet to see or use one, but have heard a lot about it.
Thanks, but: Is it a floppy drive or a hard drive? I have someone calling me
every week asking, "Is there a floppy drive for the Port?" ... (besides the
PDD2, of course <g>)
It's a 3.5" 1.44Mb floppy drive.
Sparcom (800)827-8416
Drive95. The portable floppy disk drive for the HP 95LX, provides a new method
of communication and data transfer/storage. Read/write and store data, execute
applications and save money-by using standard DOS format 3 1/2" disks (720K or
1.44Mb) with your palmtop computer. A single charge powers the Drive95 for up
to 15 hours of portable use. AC adapter, serial cable and software are
included.
List price: $330
You can buy the Drive95 from Sparcom or from EduCalc @ (800)535-9650.
Floppy. 720K and 1.44M. Serial port. Rechargeable batteries and charger
included. Available from EduCALC (800)677-7001 for under $300. I got mine used
from someone on Palmtops Forum.
BTW, with the Portfolio, you have to use a null-modem adapter.
It is a portable 720K/1.44M floppy drive coupling to any DOS computer through
the serial port. It acts as a KERMIT server, but has device driver software
that makes it transparent to the user. Looks like another disk drive. It also
works with the HP95 and automatically transfers the software to the '95.
Rechargeable batteries (internal) and charger included. About the same size and
weight as the Flashdrive. (Maybe slightly larger). Available from EduCALC for
under $300.
BTW, I forgot to mention that you must use a null-modem adapter with computers
other than the HP95LX. (The cable is set up for the '95 which takes a
null-modem cable.)
